Dzerzhinskhimmash JSC possess the license on manufacture of shell-and tube heat exchangers under the original design, provided by ABB LUMMUS HEAT TRANSFER (Patent name: Helixchanger )

Operation principle

Helixchanger is shell-and-tube heat exchanger with helicoids baffles in shell side. Each baffle is a segment making one quarter of circle, with special gradient angle to heat exchanger axis. Successive baffles are arranged in the way providing continuous piston-like flow in shell side.

Application fields


HELIXCHANGERs are used successfully in the fields where thermal transmission factor in shell side is crucial, and the shell zone clogging and pressure differential are of special attention.

Hydrogen enriched gases, water or viscous clogging-prone liquids can be used in single or double-phase flows as the shell side medium pulp and paper.

Upon the customer request, HELIXCHANGERs can be manufactured of special design of shells (as per TEMA E, J standards) or with special multi-pass shells and multi-pass tubes.

Heat exchangers of this type are widely used in oil-producing, petrochemical and power industries, as well as in the field of pulp-and-paper and food industries, for instance:

  • Oil heat exchangers;
  • Gas heat exchangers;
  • Water-chilling systems;
  • Auxiliary compressor chillers.
  • Gas-liquid heat exchangers;
  • Reactor feed heat exchangers;
  • Condensers;
  • Reboilers.
HELIXCHANGERs can be successfully applied both in the up-to-date solutions and in processes. Depending on suspected reduction of production space and energy savings, pressure differential decrease and disinvestment, the newly designed structures are optimized.

Upon the request, we can provide comparative analysis to convenient (standard) models HTRI/HTFS. If recon-structed, the existing shells can be used after replacement of tube bundle to increase thermal transmission ca-pacity and/or thermal efficiency with subsequent maintenance frequency and equipment stoppage time shorten-ing.

In relation to shell side capacity of 'water-water' heat exchange, Helixchanger possesses the following potential advantages:

  • 1,8 times increased heat transfer
  • 4,5 times reduction of pressure differential;
